The Butler County jailer, a “generous and compassionate” person, died suddenly after collapsing at a meeting.

Jailer Wayne Russ died on Monday night after collapsing at a meeting of the Little Muddy Rural Development district, according to a report by the Beech Tree News.

Witnesses told the Morgantown news outlet that “Russ apparently became ill during the meeting and went to the kitchen, saying he wasn’t feeling well.  He drank some water and was seated, talking to people but still appeared to be feeling ill.”

Only a few minutes later, the 51-year-old Russ fell over and appeared to not be breathing. People at the meeting began CPR before an ambulance transported Russ to a hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Russ was preparing to run for his second term as jailer, the Beech Tree News reports.

Butler Co. Fiscal Court wrote the following tribute to Russ on its Facebook page:

Butler County has lost a truly kind soul.

Wayne Russ, who was currently serving as the Butler County Jailer, was far more than his title. Wayne was one of the most generous, compassionate individuals—always ready to lend a helping hand.

For years, Wayne made a significant impact on our community through his kindness, his willingness to serve, and his countless acts of support throughout the county.

He leaves behind a legacy of generosity, service, and warmth that will forever be remembered in Butler County. His smile, his gentle words, and his genuine care for others will be deeply missed.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Wayne’s family, friends, and all who loved him.
