A new Butler County jailer has been selected to replace Wayne Russ who died unexpectedly last week.

Butler County Judge-Executive Tim Flener announced on social media that longtime Butler County Deputy Jailer Kelli Fugate has been selected as the new jailer.

“Kelli has faithfully served the Butler County Jail for over 26 years and brings extensive training, certifications, and experience that were key in this decision,” Flener said. “This decision was not made lightly. All deputies were given thoughtful and thorough consideration from the moment I was informed the responsibility rested with me.”

Fugate was sworn-in earlier this week.

She takes office after first-term Jailer Wayne Russ passed away last Monday night after collapsing at a Little Muddy Rural Development District meeting.

Russ was a popular figure in Butler County, as Butler Co. Fiscal Court issued the following statement following Russ’ sudden death:

Butler County has lost a truly kind soul.

Wayne Russ, who was currently serving as the Butler County Jailer, was far more than his title. Wayne was one of the most generous, compassionate individuals—always ready to lend a helping hand.

For years, Wayne made a significant impact on our community through his kindness, his willingness to serve, and his countless acts of support throughout the county.

He leaves behind a legacy of generosity, service, and warmth that will forever be remembered in Butler County. His smile, his gentle words, and his genuine care for others will be deeply missed.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Wayne’s family, friends, and all who loved him.
