A CSX train carrying a flammable and toxic chemical derailed in Todd County.
The derailment occurred near the intersection of Hwy 41 and Tress Shop Road in the small town of Trenton at approximately 6:15 a.m. Tuesday, according to the Todd County Sheriff’s Office.
Residents within half a mile of the accident site were placed under a shelter-in-place order and also asked to disconnect HVAC systems.
At least two of the cars were carrying molten sulfur, a highly flammable and toxic chemical, resulting in a large fire as one of the box cars “disintegrated,” according to a report by WEKT.com. The news agency also reports that 31 cars derailed.
A warming shelter was opened in nearby Guthrie for impacted residents. The shelter-in-place and HVAC orders were lifted at about 11:00 a.m. following an air quality test.
According to Cameo Chemicals, molten sulfur is:
“A pale yellow crystalline solid with a faint odor of rotten eggs. Insoluble in water. A fire and explosion risk above 450°F. Transported as a yellow to red liquid. Handled at elevated temperature (typically 290°F) to prevent solidification and makes transfers easier. Hot enough that plastic or rubber may melt or lose strength. Causes thermal burns to skin on contact. Cools rapidly and solidifies if released. Equipment designed to protect against ordinary chemical exposure is ineffective against the thermal hazard. Exercise caution walking on the surface of a spill to avoid breakthrough into pockets of molten sulfur below the crust. Do not attempt to remove sulfur impregnated clothing because of the danger of tearing flesh if a burn has resulted. May be irritation to skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Used in sulfuric acid production, petroleum refining, and pulp and paper manufacturing.”
In a statement Tuesday afternoon, CSX said “crews remain on scene and are working as safely and quickly as possible to clean up the impacted site. We appreciate the swift response and coordination of local first responders and emergency management officials.”
There have been no injuries reported.
