Leitchfield Mayor Harold Miller said that an expansion of the splash pad at Firefighter’s Memorial Park is imminent, and the planned addition of more pickleball courts is being put “on hold.”
Clayton Miller stated at the time that “maybe a slide, small merry-go-round” or another splash pad be added at the park.
Councilman Billy Dallas agreed, saying, “We built the splash park to be expanded. And I think that’s something we really need to expand on. I’m sure it’s expensive, but again, we built this one to be built on to.”
Councilman Tooty Cottrell also supported researching possible equipment additions to the park, as the mayor stated at the June meeting that he “thinks it’s time to look into adding more play equipment.”
Harold Miller said at Monday night’s city council meeting that officials have “looked at the area (containing the splash pad) and (we) can probably double what’s there” now.
The mayor, then asked about a plan to add more pickleball courts, said he believes expanding the splash pad and adding playground equipment at the park would be a better investment for the community.
“I think personally that we can look at the splash pad and upgrade the playground stuff (equipment) may be money better spent right now … That’s just my opinion,” he said.
Regarding adding more pickleball courts, the mayor said that there are “mixed opinions” about the project.
“I think we need to step back and reevaluate and make sure it’s something that we need right now,” Harold Miller stated. But for the immediate future, discussions have taken place that resulted in the project “being put on hold.”
Research regarding the splash pad expansion and addition of playground equipment remains ongoing.
Lighting
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet informed the mayor that additional lighting will be added to the roundabout at the intersection of Elizabethtown Road (Hwy 62) and the William Thomason Byway.
Streetlights will also be installed on Elizabethtown Road between the Clarkson and Leitchfield city limits, brightening a stretch of roadway that is currently extremely dark.
