An elderly man has died after reentering his burning home in Graves County.
The Graves County Sheriff’s Office said the fire began at approximately 11:20 Sunday morning on Hwy 303 near the Kentucky/Tennessee line.
“Cuba Fire Department personnel while responding to the scene, fought through almost non passable road conditions and temperatures in the low teens,” the sheriff’s office said in a social media post.
The investigation revealed that 79-year-old Garvin R. Doran and his 81-year-old wife, Faye Doran, fled their home when it caught fire.
Garvin Doran, though, went back inside the burning home.
“Mr. Doran told his wife that he had to go back inside to get something but never returned outside,” according to the sheriff’s office.
Faye Doran was transported to Jackson Purchase Medical Center and was later transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. She is in serious condition.
Garvin Doran’s body was not recovered from the burned home until early Monday afternoon.
Officials said the couple heated their home with a wood stove.
The fire and death remain under investigation.
