An inmate at Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex is the second weather-related death in Kentucky.

The incident happened on Tuesday morning at approximately 7:30 when inmate Marvin Knuckles, 48, of Berea, was helping clear snow and ice from the Morgan County prison’s grounds when he fell and struck his head.

He was transported to Appalachian Regional Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

“This tragic accident is one that we work to avoid each day as we protect those in our custody,” Justice and Public Safety Cabinet Secretary Keith Jackson told WKYT.com. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Knuckles and to our correctional staff. We will conduct a thorough review of this situation to better prevent this from happening again.”

Knuckles was serving 12 years after being convicted in August 2024 in Madison County on multiple counts of drug trafficking and tampering with physical evidence, according to the Kentucky Department of Corrections.

His death marks the second weather-related fatality after 72-year-old Betty Veach, of Whitley County, died on Sunday after falling near railroad tracks not far from her home. Veach, according to family members, suffered from dementia.
