Rep. Samara Heavrin’s bill that would strengthen support for children who suffer from difficulties reading and writing unanimously passed the Kentucky House.
The measure, House Bill 389, passed through the Kentucky House by a 95-0 vote on Wednesday. The bill now heads to the Senate.
“Students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, or other reading and writing difficulties require strong supports to help them achieve their fullest potential in school,’ Heavrin said. “HB 389 would give our schools access to the tools and training needed to support these students and ensure they are not left behind.”
The bill would require school districts to develop a policy for programs to identify and support students with dyslexia. Additionally, the Department of Education would be required to review and update the dyslexia toolkit annually, and teacher education programs would be required to include instruction on dyslexia.
“The General Assembly is committed to improving reading and writing literacy in our commonwealth,” Heavrin added. “This measure is an important step in the path to proficiency for thousands of our commonwealth’s students. When our challenged students succeed, all students succeed.”
Heavrin, a Republican from Leitchfield, has 15 co-sponsors on the bipartisan measure.
