Tragedy has struck in Russell County as a 15-year-old girl died during softball tryouts.

Russell County High School said Brylie Northcutt, a freshman at the school, died on Monday while trying out for the high school softball team.

The Russell County Coroner’s Office said the preliminary cause of death is a pulmonary embolism.

According to the Mayo Clinic a “pulmonary embolism is a blood clot that blocks and stops blood flow to an artery in the lung. In most cases, the blood clot starts in a deep vein in the leg and travels to the lung.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Brylie’s family, friends, classmates, and the entire Laker family during this very difficult time,” the high school wrote in a social media post.

The investigation is ongoing.
