An investigation is underway after multiple geese that populate Beville Park died over the last few days.
Leitchfield Mayor Harold Miller said four geese have died. There were several geese observed in the park on Tuesday. None appeared to be in distress.
Miller said Kentucky Fish and Wildlife officials were notified and are conducting an investigation into the deaths, including performing necropsies (the animal equivalent of an autopsy) on the deceased animals.
There are several ducks that also live in the park, and according to Miller, no ducks have been found deceased.
Fish and Wildlife officials told Leitchfield Parks and Recreation that “this is not an uncommon occurrence in the state of Kentucky. It has been happening since the end of last summer and the cold temperatures, as of late, may be a contributing factor.”
Anyone who sees a deceased goose or other deceased animals at Beville Park is instructed not to touch the animal. Call 270-259-4034 and report the location of the dead animal.
K105 will have more information on this story as it becomes available.
