The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a jury duty-related scam.
“Scammers are calling Grayson Countians telling them they missed a jury duty court date. They are using the ‘Grayson County Sheriff’s Office’ as their caller ID,” according to Grayson County Sheriff Norman Chaffins.
Additionally, the scammers may “send you a copy of a civil warrant” with the targets’ name on the document and “demand you pay a fee to avoid arrest,” Chaffins said in a social media post.
“They may email you a bogus copy of the ‘Department of Justice Civil Division’ laws and regulations section,” Chaffins added.
These scammers apparently have not researched how citizens are notified of jury duty, as those forms at mailed by the Grayson County Circuit Court Clerk.
“It is all 100% a scam! A reminder that no law enforcement agency will demand payment to avoid an arrest warrant over the phone; especially when it involves simply missing jury duty or a court date,” Chaffins said. “Normally, if you read the warrant or any instructions attached to the email or message, it will include obvious grammar, punctuation, and spelling errors that you should be able to recognize immediately as a scam.”
Chaffins recommends referring the scammers to “the ‘real’ Grayson County Sheriff’s Office and the sheriff will have some fun with them. They already have our number because they are using it as their caller ID.”
