A severe thunderstorm blew through Grayson County late Sunday night leaving a path of destruction in its wake.

The totality of the damage is not yet known, but what officials do know is that dozens of trees and utility poles were downed or severely damaged, and a tornado briefly touched down near the Valero in Caneyville, at 512 Morgantown Street, according to Caneyville Fire Chief Brian Pharris.

A cloud rotation was also spotted near the intersection of Carter Road and Brandenburg Road in north Leitchfield. It doesn’t appear the possible twister touched down.

The county was under a Tornado Warning from approximately 9:56 p.m. until 10:45 p.m. The Tornado Warning was issued 14 minutes after residents were alerted to a Severe Thunderstorm Warning.

Damage reports

A roof was deposited in the drive-thru lanes of The Cecilian Bank on the Town Square in Leitchfield. The Leitchfield Police Department said the roof was possibly peeled off the Keystone building, but that information has not yet been confirmed. Caution tape surrounds the debris field.

There were bricks and other debris in the roadway on West Main Street and South Cannon Drive in Leitchfield, just off the Town Square.

There was a report of a barn losing its roof in the 5800 block of Beaver Dam Road.

On Shrewsbury Road, there were two blockages: One due to multiple trees in the roadway and another due to a downed utility pole.

On Stones Chapel Road, a deck surrounding an above-ground pool was spirited away by the thunderstorm (see photo below).

There were reports of trees or utility poles blocking roadways from one end of Grayson County to the other, keeping fire departments throughout the county busy removing the obstructions.

At one point during the evening, nearly 5,000 Grayson County power customers were without electricity. That number was reduced to 2,000 without power by 6:50 a.m. on Monday.

No injuries have been reported.

The light of day on Monday should reveal the extent of the damage in Grayson County.

K105 will have more information on the damage caused by the storm as it becomes available.
