For the first time since 2009, the Grayson County High School Cougars basketball team will play in the UK Healthcare Boys Basketball Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena as K105 or 103.9 The Moose will have coverage of all 21 tournament games.

The Cougars, 25-6 on the year, started the season 4-3 after facing several outstanding squads, including nationally ranked Woodward Academy in the Marshall County Hoopfest in early December.

The team then went on a historic roll, propelled by a high-octane offense and a smothering, pressure defense, as the Cougars won a program-record 13 straight games between December 27 and February 6, highlighted by victories over Danville Christian Academy (79-74), Owensboro Apollo (68-57) and Nashville, Tennessee’s Ensworth Academy (78-69).

The back end of the season was highlighted by two wins over top 10 ranked Daviess County, including a thrilling, 65-62 last second victory over the Panthers in the semifinals of the Third Region Tournament when senior guard Jagger Mardis nailed a 3-pointer from the wing off an assist from Jack Logsdon.

The Cougars won the Third Region Tournament and earned a spot in the Sweet 16 by dispatching a solid Meade County team, 81-59.

Over the course of the memorable season, junior star guard Logsdon (20.2 ppg), the Cougars scoring leader and WKU commit, became the program’s all-time leading scorer, as he passed head coach Travis Johnston with his 2,285 point in a 94-44 dismantling of Butler County on February 24 in the first round of the 12th District Tournament (a tourney the Cougars won by an average of 34 points).

Additionally, second leading scorer, senior do-it-all guard Brody Armstrong (15.2 ppg), surpassed the 1,000-point mark of his high school career on December 29 against Danville Christian Academy at the Henry County Invitational Tournament.

The Cougars, who average 77.8 points per game, while giving up only 58.4 points per contest, have won nine straight going into the Sweet 16.

Coverage of the Sweet 16 begins this morning at 10:00, as two of the state’s top ranked teams, Covington Catholic and St. Xavier, open the tournament. That game will be followed by Warren Central vs. North Laurel at 12:30.

Both of those games can be heard on 103.9 The Moose.

The Cougars open the night session by taking on Taylor County at 5:00, as Sam Gormley and Steven Smith will have the call on K105 and via the K105 audio stream.

The next game of the night session boasts Danville Christian Academy against Great Crossing at 7:30, as coverage of the tournament switches back to 103.9 The Moose.
