A man has died in a fiery crash while fleeing police.
The incident began on Sunday night at approximately 8:45 when a speeding 2017 Chevrolet Camaro failed to stop for Kentucky State Police near the 128-mile marker of I-64 in Bath County.
The fleeing vehicle, according to state police, exited I-64 at exit 133 in Rowan County. The Camaro turned onto Hwy 801 and continued to flee from the trooper. After losing sight of the fleeing vehicle while on Hwy 801, the trooper ended the pursuit at around 8:50 p.m. and continued patrolling the area.
“Some local citizens reported that a vehicle matching the description of the fleeing Camaro had recently passed by on Hwy 801, heading south,” state police said. “Shortly after 9:00, a trooper located the Camaro and again attempted to conduct a traffic stop.”
The vehicle increased speed and again fled from the trooper.
As the Camaro approached the intersection of Hwy 801 and Hwy 519, the driver, 30-year-old Donavan K. Porter, of Grahn (Carter Co.), lost control, resulting in the vehicle leaving the roadway and striking a utility pole.
The vehicle caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames.
“Troopers made every effort to remove the driver from the vehicle but were unsuccessful,” according to state police.
Porter was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Rowan County Coroner’s Office.
The investigation is ongoing and is being led by the KSP Critical Incident Response Team.
