Return, funeral arrangements announced for soldier from Bardstown killed in refueling accident

Funeral arrangements for a Bardstown soldier killed in a plane refueling accident have been released.

U.S. Air Force Technical Sgt. Ashley B. Pruitt, 34, was killed on March 12 when a KC-135 air tanker went down in western Iraq. Five other soldiers died in the accident.

Pruitt joined the military nine years ago and previously deployed overseas three times. She had nearly 900 combat flight hours and two associate degrees from the Community College of the Air Force.

Most recently, she served with the 99th Air Refueling Squadron from Sumpter Smith Joint National Guard Base in Birmingham, Alabama. She was an assistant flight chief of operations and was an instructor in operating the boom of a KC-135.

Her body will arrive Thursday, April 9 at Samuels Field Airport in Bardstown at 11:00 a.m. for a dignified transfer and escort through Bardstown to Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home.

Pruitt’s funeral will be on Saturday, April 11 at 11:00 a.m. at New Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, according to her obituary.

Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, April 10, 2026, at Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home at 1475 New Shepherdsville Road in Bardstown.

Pruitt is survived by her husband, Gregory Pruitt, and their three-year-old son along with a stepson.
