A joint investigation between local and federal law enforcement agencies resulted in the seizure of 100 pounds of methamphetamine.

The investigation led to a traffic stop on Monday by the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office on a semi-truck in Shelbyville where police discovered “multiple suitcases containing approximately 100 pounds of crystal methamphetamine …,” according to the Jeffersontown Police Department.

Police said the estimated value of the drugs is $900,000.

“This was not a chance encounter, it was the result of deliberate coordination and focused investigative work aimed at disrupting the movement of significant quantities of narcotics,” Jeffersontown PD Chief Rick Sanders said in a press release.

Authorities believe the drugs were intended to be distributed in the Louisville area.

Two suspects, Alfonso Garcia Ruiz and Edgar Omar Sotelo Valdez, were arrested and charged with trafficking in a controlled substance.

Agencies involved in the investigation were the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Jeffersontown Police Department, DEA, IRS-Criminal Investigations, and Appalachia HIDTA.
