Wednesday night at approximately 11:20, the Leitchfield and Caneyville Fire Departments responded to 9064 Shrewsbury Road on the report of a structure fire.

Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found a wood-frame home nearly fully engulfed in flames.

The home’s only resident was a woman who was asleep in a bedroom on the opposite end of the house from where the blaze originated, when a passerby stopped at her neighbor’s house and told the man, who wishes to remain anonymous, that the house just down the road was on fire.

The man immediately jumped in his vehicle and drove the quarter-mile to his neighbor’s house, which was by now fully engulfed on the right side of house and spreading quickly. The man located the woman’s bedroom and banged on the window so hard it broke the pane, awaking the female, who escaped the residence unhurt through a nearby door. The Good Samaritan then rescued the woman’s two dogs through the broken window.

Within minutes after the woman leaving the home, her bedroom was enveloped in smoke and fire.

Although nearly 20 firefighters from Leitchfield and Caneyville battled the blaze for an hour, the home was a complete loss, including the bedroom where the resident was sleeping.

Leitchfield Fire Chief Tim Duvall said the fire likely began in the kitchen.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 1:23.
