A Leitchfield man has been charged with theft and a felony drug charge after being nabbed shoplifting at a Clarkson business.

Clarkson Police Chief Buck Meredith said that on January 29, he responded to a shoplifting complaint at L&L Sales. Upon arriving, Meredith arrested 52-year-old Hubert R. Mercer and charged him with theft by unlawful taking, under $500, and possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), a class C felony (if previously convicted of the same charge).

Police then searched Mercer’s residence in the 4000 block of Grayson Springs Road and located items reported stolen from a storage unit in Clarkson. Meredith said his office had been investigating the January 23 burglary at the storage unit when Mercer was taken into custody.

Mercer has since been charged with theft by unlawful taking, over $500, a class D felony.

In 2015, Mercer was arrested on for possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) in Hardin County. In 2016, Mercer was again arrested in Hardin County on an unspecified parole violation for a felony offense.

Mercer is currently free on bond.
