The Clarkson man found guilty in the shooting death of his daughter’s boyfriend has been formally sentenced in a Grayson County courtroom.

Billy Joe Houchin, 48, shot and killed 31-year-old Stephen Waninger, also of Clarkson (formerly of Indiana), during an argument at approximately 1:00 the morning of December 29, 2017, at Houchin’s residence at 4334 Grayson Springs Road.

After a day-and-a-half trial in mid-March 2019, Houchin was found guilty of reckless homicide in the death of Waninger. Reckless homicide is a class D felony, punishable by one to five years in prison.

On Tuesday, Houchin was sentenced to the maximum of five years, and must serve at least 15 percent of the sentence. According to Grayson County Court Clerk Stacie Blain, Houchin is eligible to have the roughly one year he has served in the Grayson County Detention Center considered time served. His attorney, though, must apply for the consideration. If granted, Houchin would be eligible for immediate release.
