The Leitchfield Fire Department responded to an early morning vehicle fire.

Leitchfield fire personnel responded to the William Thomason Byway, just south of the Grayson Springs Road intersection, at 12:15 Friday morning.

Upon arriving, firefighters found the engine compartment of a Chevrolet Equinox fully engulfed in flames. It took fire personnel about 30 minutes to fully extinguish the white hot blaze, which melted the engine mounts, dropping the engine on the ground.

The fire worked its way into the passenger compartment, destroying the interior of the SUV.

The male driver and sole occupant of the vehicle detected a burning odor before pulling over onto the shoulder of the roadway. He was uninjured.

Firefighters cleared the scene a few minutes after 1:00.
