Kentucky State Police has captured the man accused of shooting and killing a Pikeville police officer.

After an intense 36-hour manhunt, police captured 55-year-old John Russell Hall, of Pikeville, near the Pike County/Floyd County line at approximately 11:00 Thursday morning.

Hall allegedly killed Pikeville police officer Scotty Hamilton, a 12-year veteran of the department, while Hamilton was assisting Kentucky State Police with an investigation in the Hurricane Creek area of Pike County on Tuesday night.

Kentucky State Police originally said one person was in custody, but later reported that the shooting suspect had not been captured. Four people were arrested at the scene of the shooting on unrelated charges.

Hall was lodged in the Pike County Detention Center where he’s been charged with murder and possession of a handgun by a convicted felon.
