Grayson County Detention Center inmates will again save thousands of dollars on a local project.

At Monday night’s Leitchfield City Council meeting, Leitchfield Softball President Jeremy Woosley presented a plan to renovate the aging concession stand at the softball fields at Beville Park. Woosley said a room addition will be added to the existing building, as well as a second floor. Council members approved Woosley’s renovation plan.

Officials are awaiting a list of materials needed for the project, and when that list is received, an advertisement for bids will be published.

While inmates will help in the construction of the building, they are precluded from performing certain types of labor (e.g., plumbing, electrical, brick and mortar) according to Woosley, but will save several thousand dollars by performing other work.

“I’m very thankful for the city to approve this project, and for the help pledged by Jailer Jason Woosley and the Grayson County Detention Center,” said Daniel Gary, Leitchfield Girls Softball Director. “This will help us continue to grow our program and reach our goals at the Thomason-Allen Softball Complex. Special credit goes to Jeremy Woosley for the countless hours he puts into the program.”

This is only the latest example of inmate labor lowering the cost of a project — At a special called Grayson County Fiscal Court meeting in June, magistrates rejected bids for flooring work for the Grayson County Detention Center expansion project. Grayson County Jailer Jason Woosley previously said inmate labor would be used to save over $300,000 on the expansion, as inmates will complete resilient and resinous flooring work.
