The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office and Kentucky State Police worked in concert on Tuesday night to arrest a Madisonville man previously arrested for armed robbery.
Tuesday night at approximately 11:30, Kentucky State Trooper Alex Ware executed a traffic stop on a Nissan Maxima near the 114 mile marker of westbound Western Kentucky Parkway. The vehicle, according to the arrest citation, had only one working headlight and swerved across the fog line.
Soon after the stop, Trooper Joey Beasley arrived to assist Ware.
The citation states that upon Ware making contact with the driver, 22-year-old Joseph R. Singleton, he “appeared nervous, stuttering his words and visibly shaking.” Ware specifically asked Singleton if there were drugs or firearms inside the vehicle, with the subject responding that there were no such items in the car.
Within minutes, Grayson County Deputy DJ Newton and Sgt. Fred Norder and his K-9 Officer Marco arrived on scene. After Singleton refused to give his consent to search the Nissan, Marco was deployed around the outside of the car with the drug dog alerting to the odor of narcotics in the vehicle.
A subsequent search of the car revealed marijuana and digital scales in the center console, according to the citation. A 9mm handgun was located under the driver’s seat, and an open bottle of Crown Royal alcohol was also found in the car.
Singleton was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, with the charge being enhanced because of the presence of the firearm. He was also charged with possession of an open alcoholic beverage container in a motor vehicle, possession of drug paraphernalia, careless driving, having only one working headlight, and failure to or improper signal.
He was lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.
In March of last year, SurfKyNews.com reports the Madisonville Police Department arrested Singleton and 20-year-old William M. Saxon and charged each with first-degree robbery after the men forced their way into a residence and took items from the home, injuring the occupant in the process.
A handgun “was used in the commission of the robbery,” and drugs were a “motivating factor” in the incident, Madisonville police said.
The case is still being adjudicated in Hopkins County.
