After Leitchfield experienced a series of drug overdoses last week, the Breckinridge County Coroner’s Office has released a statement concerning a rash of drug overdose deaths in the county over the last month.

In the statement, Deputy Coroner Raleigh J. Shelton said his office is “seeing an unusual spike in overdose deaths,” adding that, “In the past four weeks, four people have died from drug-related” causes. He said the drugs involved in the fatal overdoses have included heroin and methamphetamine.

Other drugs have been detected in the systems of the overdose victims, including fentanyl, ecstasy, amphetamine, synthetic marijuana, and marijuana, according to the release.

“While it may be premature to say there is a ‘bad batch’ of drugs on the streets, the fact these overdoes occurred so close together does raise come concern,” Shelton said.

Shelton encouraged people who may know a heroin or methamphetamine user to warn the user that there could be a compromised and potentially deadly batch of drugs being sold in the community.

On Friday, June 5, Leitchfield police and Grayson County deputies responded to five heroin overdoses between 3:45 and 10:45. None of the overdoses were fatal.

Authorities in both counties continue to investigate.
