A middle school football game in Fleming County was delayed after many adults in the stands were not wearing facial coverings.
Simmons Middle School was taking on Mason County Middle School in Flemingsburg on Thursday night when Fleming County Schools Superintendent Brian Creasman stopped the game after, according to media reports, about half the adults in attendance were not wearing facial coverings.
The game was halted for about five minutes.
“A lot of our fans were not wearing face coverings,” Fleming County Schools Superintendent Brian Creasman said. “If it’s every three seconds (that I have to stop games), (then) we will stop every three seconds.”
KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tacket said on Twitter about the incident, “They’ve got to understand that this is not political and they don’t have a choice. Athletics is a privilege, not a right.”
Tackett added that most schools have been following the COVID-19 induced mask rule, but schools that are allowing more than the recommended number of fans to attend games (25 percent of capacity) have struggled with enforcement.
He also said it’s adults rather than students who are resisting the mask mandate.
“Take a look when you start to get angry, and take a look on the field, on the court, and see who this is really about,” Tackett told media outlets.
Fleming County is in eastern Kentucky, just north of Morehead.
