A Bardstown man accused of killing his girlfriend and fleeing with her small children has been arrested in Mt. Vernon, Illinois.

On Friday night, officials issued an Amber Alert for the four boys, ages 10, nine, six, and one, after police found their mother murdered Friday at approximately 5:30 p.m. during a welfare check at 151 Robin Drive in Bardstown, police said.

Officers responded to the home after receiving a 911 call from a witness who saw a man and the four children leave together in a vehicle.

The woman was found dead on her kitchen floor.

Police quickly identified 32-year-old Richard S. Gray as a suspect, who fled Kentucky with the children in a Jeep Patriot.

Friday night at approximately 11:15 central time, only a short time after the Amber Alert was issued, Gray was arrested without incident in Mt. Vernon, about 80 miles southeast of St. Louis, Missouri, according to the Bardstown Police Department. The four children were with the suspect and were unharmed.

Gray, whose relationship to the children has not been made public, was lodged in the Jefferson County (IL) Jail where he awaits extradition to Kentucky. He faces murder and kidnapping charges.
