A man has been killed in a four-vehicle crash on I-65 in Simpson County.

Kentucky State Police said troopers responded to the 1.2-mile marker of southbound I-65 Thursday morning at approximately 4:00.

The preliminary investigation showed that 28-year-old Christopher Steger, of Harrison, Ohio, was driving a 2019 Ford EcoSport south when, for an unknown reason, his vehicle entered the right emergency lane where it struck a parked 2019 Volvo tractor-trailer with a flat tire.

After hitting the semi, police said Steger’s vehicle re-entered the southbound lanes where it was struck by two semi-trucks, a 2016 Volvo, being driven by Eliseo Sanchez, of Mexico, and a 2014 Kenworth, being driven by Derek Boswell, of Memphis, Tennessee.

Steger was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene by the Simpson County Coroner’s Office.

No other injuries were reported.

The investigation continues and is being led by KSP Det. Michael Waggener.

Due to traffic being backed up from the fatality crash, state police said another accident occurred around 5:30 a.m. involving six vehicles, including three tractor-trailers. Despite a large fire (mistakenly shown by some news outlets as being the fatal crash), no major injuries were reported in the second crash.

Two non-injury wrecks in the same area occurred later in the morning, also due to traffic congestion related to the crashes.
