The Webster County sheriff has been indicted for first-degree official misconduct and tampering with a witness.

Sheriff Donald “Bubba” Jones, 57, of Sebree, was indicted by a Webster County Grand Jury on Wednesday, according to the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office, whose detectives investigated the case.

Jones was appointed sheriff in 2020 after the then-Sheriff Frankie Springfield retired effective December 31, 2020, with two years left in his term. Jone took office on January 1, 2021, after serving as chief deputy under Springfield for 15 years, the Journal-Enterprise reported in a story published when Jones became sheriff.

He has worked for the sheriff’s office since January 1996, according to an article by the Journal-Enterprise previewing the 2022 Primary Election. He lost that election to former Kentucky State Police Trooper William “Billy” Braden.

The official misconduct charge is a class A misdemeanor while the tampering count is a class D felony.

Officials have not released what incident[s] led to the indictment.
