November was proclaimed “No Shave November” by the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office and Leitchfield Police Department as the agencies raised money for a local nine-year-old child with cancer.

At the beginning of November, Sheriff Norman Chaffins said deputies and LPD officers would donate $5 per day to the family of Logan Sommer for every day in November that deputies go without shaving.

“Each day that they go without shaving they will donate $5 for a total of $150 if they go the entire month,” Chaffins said. “100% of the proceeds will go to the family of Logan Sommer … Logan is one of three triplets that finished his last chemotherapy treatment a year or so ago. Sadly, his cancer has returned and it is in 48% of his bone marrow. He and his mom have some long days ahead of them as he battles this awful disease.”

As a result of his deputies’/officers’ donations as well as countless contributions from the Grayson County community, Chaffins, earlier this month, presented a check for $13,005 to the Sommer family to help with mounting medical bills.

Logan’s mother, Shelly Sommer, a single mother, is grateful beyond measure for the assistance provided by Chaffins, his deputies, the Leitchfield Police Department and the many people who contributed.

“I’m a contract worker with no benefits so if I’m not working I’m not getting paid,” Shelly Sommer said. “As you can imagine I’m working as much as possible but nowhere near the hours I was working before he (Logan) got sick again. Sheriff Chaffins’ No Shave November is an amazing blessing for us. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to say thank you enough.”
