An explosive garage fire on Sunbeam Road on Wednesday, just outside the Leitchfield city limits, was fueled by racing fuel.
Wednesday afternoon at approximately 3:30, the Leitchfield and Clarkson Fire Departments, Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Clay Boone and EMS responded to the blaze in the 2800 block of Sunbeam Road.
When first responders arrived on scene, the garage was fully engulfed in flames, as multiple explosions rocked the structure. Firefighters immediately moved two nearby vehicles away from the flames.
The explosions, LFD Chief Tim Duvall said, were caused by racing fuel and racing fuel vapors.
Leitchfield fire personnel were able to knock down the fire before it spread to an adjacent box trailer, residence, propane tank, and trees.
The two race cars and other items were destroyed in the blaze.
The homeowner, who Duvall said was working on one of his race cars when the fire erupted, refused transport to the ER.
Firefighters cleared the scene at 4:40.
