Grayson County native Kylee Gorby has been named the next head coach of the Midway University women’s basketball team.
Gorby was the head coach at Spalding University for the past three years.
During her time in Louisville, the Golden Eagles had four St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) All-Conference selections and the SLIAC Defensive Player of the Year. She also helped lead her squad to a SLIAC Tournament appearance in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons.
“The opportunity to add a young, talented coach like Kylee to our coaching staff was one we couldn’t pass up,” said Midway’s Vice President of Athletics Daniel Prevett. “My familiarity with Coach Gorby from my time at Asbury and seeing how hard of a worker she was certainly helped in making this decision to bring her in as the next leader of our women’s basketball program.”
Gorby also has experience as an assistant coach at both Georgetown and Asbury University.
“I’d like to express my thanks to VP of Athletics, Daniel Prevett, and the administration at Midway University for this exciting opportunity,” Gorby said in a release. “Having had the unique experience of competing in the River States Conference as a player and an assistant coach, I know firsthand its rich history and high level of competition.”
Gorby starred on the hardwood for Grayson County High School from the 2008 season, as an eighth grader, until 2012, scoring over 1,000 points in her career. She was named First Team All-Region in 2012, and First Team All-District in both 2011 and 2012.
Her Lady Cougars squads won five consecutive district tourney titles and were Third Region runner-up in 2011 and 2012. As a senior, Gorby averaged 16 points and five assists per game.
While at GCHS, Gorby also participated in cross country, softball and tennis, as well as being named a Kentucky Governor’s Scholar.
Gorby attended Asbury after graduating from GCHS and helped lead the Eagles to a 98-34 record, the program’s winningest four-year stretch in school history. Asbury participated in back-to-back national tournaments in 2011 and 2012 after the Eagles won conference tournament titles in both seasons. The 2011 national tournament was the program’s first-ever appearance in the event.
In her senior year at Asbury, Gorby was selected First Team All-KIAC and to the NAIA All-Tournament team. For her career, she scored 1,197 points, handed out 410 assists and snagged 452 rebounds.
Midway University is an NAIA school located between Frankfort and Lexington. Last season, they finished with a 23-9 record before losing in the opening round of the NAIA tournament to the University of the Cumberlands.
The current roster includes a pair of former 3rd Region standouts in Breckinridge County’s Aleigha Mucker and Apollo’s Kassidy Daugherty.
