A longtime city of Leitchfield employee was recently bestowed the Professional of the Year award by the Kentucky Recreation & Parks Society.

Leitchfield Parks & Recreation Director Tammee Saltsman announced at Monday night’s city council meeting that Keith Pierce won the award.

“The award recognizes an individual with more than five years of experience for their outstanding contributions to the profession of parks and recreation,” Saltsman stated. “An individual that goes above and beyond (and) that demonstrates distinctive leadership and meritorious services to our profession.”

Pierce has worked for the city for 20 years, and since 2019 has been an invaluable employee with the parks & rec department.

“I was honored to present Keith Pierce the professional of the year award … Only one award is given out each year,” Saltsman said. “I was really honored to be able to give that to him this year.”

Saltsman added that she collected letters of recommendation for Pierce from the general public, Mayor Harold Miller and other city officials.

“He does a good job. (City Clerk/Treasurer) Lori (Woosley) and I went over to attend the ceremony,” Miller said. “He was surprised and it was a good event for him. He deserves it.”

Executive Session

The council went into Executive Session for 20 minutes to discuss ongoing litigation.

When City Attorney Earlene Wilson and council members emerged from the meeting, she said she gave an update to council members on two continuing legal cases: One case was sent to mediation and the other case is on appeal.

Utility Commission

The council also heard the first reading of an ordinance that would change the Leitchfield Utility Commission’s pay schedule from “per meeting” to “once per month.”

The council will vote on the matter at the second and final reading at the next scheduled meeting on December 4.
