Grayson County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Sonny Poteet has announced his candidacy for Grayson County sheriff.

With current Sheriff Norman Chaffins opting not to run for a fourth term, Poteet, a Republican, joins Clarkson Police Chief Buck Meredith, also a Republican, in running for the office of sheriff.

Poteet began his law enforcement career with the Leitchfield Police Department in 1997 before transferring to the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office in 1999. In 2003, he joined the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD). Poteet retired from LMPD in 2017 and  joined the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office as a lieutenant on November 9, 2017.

He was promoted to Grayson County Chief Deputy in February 2023, replacing the retiring Jarrod Mudd.

Poteet released the following statement on his candidacy:

My name is Sonny Poteet and I am honored to serve as Chief Deputy of the Grayson County Sheriff’s Office.

Today, I am officially announcing my candidacy for Sheriff of Grayson County in the 2026 Primary Election.

With 28 years of experience in law enforcement, I have dedicated my career to serving and protecting this community. As sheriff, I will continue building on the progress we have made, ensuring that the sheriff’s office remains a strong, reliable, and trusted partner for the people of Grayson County.

My goal is to lead with transparency, accountability, and a commitment to keeping our community safe while strengthening the bonds between law enforcement and the citizens we serve.

I want to thank my family for their support, as well as the many friends and neighbors who have encouraged me to take this step. Your confidence means so much to me.

I am excited to begin this campaign and look forward to meeting with you, hearing your concerns, and working together to make Grayson County an even better place to live.

Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you in the months ahead.

Respectfully,

Sonny Poteet

The 2026 Primary Election is on May 19. The candidate filing deadline to run in the 2026 primary is January 9.
