A man shot and killed his mother before turning the gun on himself as police closed in.

Kevin Berry, 51, a former Laurel County deputy, is accused of shooting and killing his 77-year-old mother, Margie Berry, at her home on Leslie Drive in Berea on Saturday night, according to a report by WKYT.com.

Margie Berry was on the phone with a friend when her son shot her. Kevin Berry was named as a suspect soon after the shooting.

At approximately 10:00 a.m. Sunday, Kentucky State Police notified law enforcement agencies in eastern Kentucky to be on the lookout for the suspect’s vehicle as it was thought to be traveling from Tennessee into Kentucky on I-75.

Williamsburg Assistant Police Chief Brandon White spotted the vehicle and began following. The vehicle began to pull onto the shoulder when White activated his lights and sirens.

The suspect’s vehicle then rolled into a rock wall and came to a stop, as White issued multiple commands to the occupant with no response.

Police then utilized a drone to determine the vehicle was safe to approach when they discovered Kevin Berry deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The investigation is ongoing.

Kevin Berry, who rose to the rank of captain with the Laurel County Sheriff’s Office, left law enforcement in 2020.
