A Ten Commandments monument removed from the state Capitol and placed into storage has been returned to the Capitol grounds.

“The historic Ten Commandments monument given to the commonwealth of Kentucky in 1971 by the Fraternal Order of Eagles has been restored to the Kentucky Capitol on the state Capitol grounds in Monument Park,” The Family Foundation said.

The restoration of the monument comes as a result of the passage of the 2025 regular session’s House Joint Resolution (HJR) 15, authored by state Rep. Shane Baker, R – Somerset.

HJR 15 passed the Kentucky Senate 32-6 and the House 79-13.

“A Ten Commandments monument was displayed on the grounds of the Kentucky State Capitol from 1971 until 1980 or so. It was removed at that time to make room for construction on the grounds,” according to the Kentucky Attorney General’s Office.

The display of the Ten Commandments has been tied up in court, originating with a lawsuit by the ACLU in 2000 when then Gov. Paul Patton signed Senate Joint Resolution 57, ordering the Department for Facilities Management to display the monument near the floral clock located on the West Lawn of the Capitol grounds.
