The teenager accused of robbing a bank in Berea and killing two bank employees has been formally charged with three federal crimes.

Brailen Lee Weaver, 18, of Somerset, according to an FBI affidavit, entered the U.S. Bank at 630 Chestnut Street at 1:57 p.m. on Thursday and almost immediately shot and killed bank employee, 42-year-old Brian Switzer, of Jessamine County. Shortly after shooting Switzer, Weaver shot and killed a teller, 35-year-old Breanna Edwards, of Madison County.

He was captured Friday morning at approximately 3:00 on I-64 in Lexington.

On Monday, Weaver made his first appearance in U.S. District Court in Lexington where he was formally charged with armed bank robbery, use of a firearm in a crime of violence and causing death with a firearm during a crime of violence.

Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman said his office is “working collaboratively with federal authorities, and we will pursue state murder charges following the shootings in Berea.”

Weaver is currently being held in the Woodford County Detention Center on no bond.
