A massive search is underway in Monroe County after a teenage driver was swept off a bridge by flood waters.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said that Monday night at approximately 7:00, authorities responded to a report of a motorist, 19-year-old Leah Carter, of Gamaliel, driving onto a bridge and being swept into East Fork Creek by flood waters.

An extensive search effort began immediately, with multiple law enforcement agencies and emergency personnel involved, according to the sheriff’s office. Helicopters were also used, as the search for Carter continued throughout Monday night and into Tuesday morning. The sheriff’s office said that during that time the creek level decreased by over 10 feet, increasing visibility. And at approximately 5:30 Tuesday morning, Carter’s car was located about 500 yards from where she left the road.

At this time, though, Carter has not been found.

Monroe County Emergency Management is leading the search and rescue efforts and is being assisted by fire departments from Gamaliel, Summer Shade, Campbellsville, Taylor County, and Barren County.

The investigation is being led by the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the Tompkinsville Police Department and Kentucky State Police.
