As happened in early February, someone’s personal Facebook post claiming that an attempted abduction occurred at the Elizabethtown and Leitchfield Walmart stores have proven false.
After being “flooded with inquiries about a semi-viral Facebook post,” the Elizabethtown PD posted the following statement on its Facebook page shutting down the fast-spreading falsehoods:
Folks, we have been flooded with inquiries about a semi-viral Facebook post that claimed, among other things, that EPD arrested two people for an attempted abduction at Walmart. The post also made the claim that a cashier at Walmart hit a button and locked down the entire store so that we could make the arrest. Just WOW. Folks. Please.
Verify before sharing. This post has already been shared all over the place. We have received no reports or intelligence whatsoever verifying any of these claims. The post also mentions Leitchfield as a location where an attempted abduction took place. We reached out to Detective (Kevin) Smith with the Leitchfield Police Department, and he confirmed that they have received NO reports of any such activity.
As always folks, please reach out to authoritative sources before sharing such information. Thank you to the folks that reached out to us to verify this information before spreading it further!
The Leitchfield Police Department linked the Elizabethtown PD’s post and added, “The Leitchfield Police Department has not received any reports of any kind specified in the post.”
In early February, a nearly identical rumor was propagated on Facebook without benefit of containing any truth. As happened on Tuesday, both Elizabethtown and Leitchfield police issued statements quashing the rumors.
