A man has been killed after running a red light and colliding with a deputy sheriff.

Kentucky State Police said troopers responded on Tuesday evening at 9:30 to the accident at the intersection of Hustonville Road (Hwy 127) and West Shelby Street in Junction City in Boyle County.

State police said the investigation revealed that Boyle County Deputy Zach King was driving a 2023 Dodge Durango north on Hustonville Road and was attempting to make a left turn onto West Shelby Street.

As the deputy was turning through the intersection, a 2023 Hyundai Elantra, being driven by 27-year-old Michael Mingey, of Lancaster, was traveling south on Hustonville Road when Mingey “disregarded the traffic control device and struck the Dodge Durango,” police said.

Mingey was transported to Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased by the Boyle County Coroner’s Office.

King was transported to the same hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

KSP Det. Tyler Holt is conducting the ongoing investigation.
