The verdict is in regarding what killed multiple geese at Beville Park.

As K105 reported, Leitchfield Mayor Harold Miller said four geese were found deceased at the park in early- to mid-February. Kentucky Fish and Wildlife officials were notified and conducted a necropsy (animal autopsy) on one of the geese.

On Tuesday, Leitchfield Parks and Recreation Director Trent VanMeter told K105 that the necropsied goose died of avian influenza.

“Fish and Wildlife believe that since there have been no other birds found deceased at the park, and no other reports of avian influenza in Grayson County, the birds were sick when they arrived (at the park) and they chose Beville Park as their final resting place,” VanMeter told K105.

According to the American Veterinary Medical Association: “Avian influenza appears periodically all over the world, including in the United States. The virus spreads easily among wild, migratory aquatic birds, with waterfowl and shorebirds considered natural hosts.”

No other geese or ducks at Beville Park have shown signs of distress. The incubation period of avian influenza is two to 14 days.
