Nearly 40 dogs were seized at a “backyard breeding” operation in Hart County.

The Hart County Sheriff’s Office said deputies “received an anonymous tip regarding dogs that were not being properly cared for.”

Deputies and the Hart County Animal Shelter on Monday arrived at 1591 Tommy Toms Road in Horse Cave. Upon arriving at the property, police found 37 dogs “living in unfit conditions and without proper care,” the sheriff’s office said.

The Hart County Animal Shelter, which took control of the dogs, described the scene as a rogue breeding operation.

“Yesterday we rescued 37 dogs from a backyard breeding situation and brought them to safety. They are now receiving the care, medical attention, and TLC they have always deserve,” the shelter said in a social media post.

The dog’s owner was charged with animal cruelty, according to the sheriff’s office. The suspect’s name was not released and no one currently lodged in the Hart County Jail is facing animal cruelty charges.
