An impaired Grayson County man has been arrested after fighting with and spitting on a constable.
The incident occurred Wednesday night at approximately 7:00 in the 400 block of West Main Street (Hwy 62) in Clarkson when Constable Bill Dalton observed a vehicle driving erratically, as the vehicle nearly struck Dalton’s vehicle, according to police.
The vehicle, driven by 33-year-old Matthew J. VanMeter, pulled into a business parking lot followed by Dalton. VanMeter then vomited.
Dalton, checking to see if the driver was suffering from a medical emergency, discovered VanMeter was likely intoxicated. As the suspect attempted to leave the scene, he struck Dalton’s vehicle.
An altercation ensued, as police said VanMeter fought with and spit on Dalton.
The Grayson County Sheriff’s Office and Leitchfield Police Department soon arrived on the scene and assisted Dalton.
VanMeter was transported to Owensboro Health Twin Lakes Medical Center for medical clearance before being lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center where he was charged with third-degree assault of a police officer, DUI (aggravating circumstances), first-degree criminal mischief, third-degree terroristic threatening, and possession of an open alcoholic beverage container in a motor vehicle.
