A tanker carrying hazardous materials crashed and ruptured a diesel fuel compartment.
The accident happened just before noon on Tuesday in the 2100 block of Hwy 110 in Breckinridge County.
The Falls of Rough Fire Department responded to assist the Hardinsburg Fire Department, Breckinridge County Sheriff’s Office, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Breckinridge Central EMS, and Breckinridge County Emergency Management.
The six-axle tanker truck, carrying gasoline and off-road diesel fuel, overcorrected on a sharp turn and left the roadway. The tanker then struck a rock embankment, which ruptured the diesel compartment, according to Breckinridge Co. Emergency Management (BCEM).
Upon arriving at the scene, crews began hazard containment and environmental protection.
“Responders established dykes along the adjacent ditch line, applied absorbent materials to control ground flow, and successfully sealed a ruptured section of the tanker using field-expedient improvised methods,” BCEM said.
A coordinated effort with the wrecker service allowed for the safe recovery of the vehicle from the rock wall and ditch without further rupture or leakage.
Anticipating incoming weather, BCEM returned to the scene alongside the Kentucky Environmental Response Team to conduct follow-up mitigation and reduce the risk of runoff before rainfall began.
