A Grayson County woman was caught after stealing a cat from the Leitchfield Animal Shelter.

The incident occurred Tuesday afternoon at approximately 1:15 when an older Leitchfield woman left the animal shelter with a cat without paying for the animal.

Leitchfield Police Department Sgt. Keith Harrell was dispatched to the animal shelter where he viewed surveillance video of the woman putting the cat down her shirt, and, as she exited the building, avoiding two employees who were completing paperwork, Harrell told K105.

An animal shelter employee wrote down the license plate to the woman’s vehicle, which led Harrell to a residence on Byrtle Grove Road. When Harrell arrived, no one was home, but as he was returning to his cruiser the suspect pulled into the driveway.

When the woman spotted Harrell, she began to drive away but Harrell quickly stopped the suspect. As he approached the vehicle, the sergeant observed the woman moving around in the front seat.

Upon making contact with the woman, Harrell noticed the woman’s hand pressing down on a large purse.  It was obvious, Harrell said, that there was something moving around in the purse.

Harrell then said, “Ma’am, let the cat out of the bag. Let the cat out.” Which she did.

The sergeant took control of the cat and cited the woman for theft of services.
