Gov. Andy Beshear said at his coronavirus (COVID-19) briefing on Wednesday that 220 new cases of the virus have been diagnosed in Kentucky.

The newly confirmed cases increase the state’s total to 15,842 victims. Earlier on Wednesday, the Magoffin County Health Department reported that an eight-month-old baby has been diagnosed with the virus. No details concerning the baby’s condition were offered.

“We’ve got to keep these case numbers under control,” Beshear said. “We’re doing a good job, but we’ve got to work even harder. We can’t let our guard down when an invisible enemy is still out there.”

The governor reported seven new deaths Wednesday, raising the total to 572 (3.6 percent) Kentuckians lost to the virus.

The deaths reported Wednesday include an 89-year-old woman from Fayette County; an 88-year-old man from Jackson County; a 63-year-old woman and 86- and 97-year-old men from Jefferson County; a 54-year-old man from Oldham County; and a 94-year-old woman from Shelby County.

Officials said 2,635 (16.6 percent) patients have been hospitalized since the onset of the pandemic, with 427 people currently in a hospital. To date, 1,007 (6.4 percent) victims have been treated in ICU, with 73 patients currently in intensive care.

In Kentucky, 4,052 (25.6 percent) people have recovered from the virus, and at least 411,217 COVID-19 (9.3 percent of the population) tests have been administered in the state.
