Audit shows Bardstown coffers short nearly $800,000

An audit conducted in Bardstown found nearly $764,000 in missing cash receipts, undocumented personal expenses and account credits over a six-year period ending last year.

Findings of the audit have been turned over to Kentucky State Police and an investigation is ongoing, WHAS-TV reported.

Certified public accountant Linda Gray outlined how the money disappeared from the Bardstown coffers during an audit presentation this month to the city council.

Gray said it appears a former employee took cash from payments made by customers before depositing the money, bought a cellphone with a city credit card, took vacation days that had not yet accrued and paid expense reimbursements without proper documentation.

The former employee wasn’t named. No charges have been filed.

Gray made several recommendations for the city to strengthen its financial controls.
