On Wednesday, Campbellsville University officials asked that students and teachers stay indoors while police responded to a residence near campus, near the men’s village.

Police said that a woman notified authorities that 78-year-old Elwin Hardin was armed with a .357 Magnum and was going to kill someone. Hardin was said to be at his home on Durrett Street, not far from the CU campus.

Kentucky State Police and the Taylor County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the Durrett Street residence and made contact with Hardin over the phone. Hardin told police he was not coming out but that police should come to the door because he had a surprise for them, according to media reports.

Hardin then came to the front door with a pistol in his hand, but went back inside. A family member soon arrived and convinced Hardin to come outside without the gun. Hardin came outside, with gun in hand, and was tased and arrested.

He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and then lodged in the Taylor County Detention Center. Hardin was charged with being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun, menacing and terroristic threatening. He’s being held on a $10,000 bond.
