The Department of Kentucky Veterans of Foreign Wars is organizing a VFW Post in Leitchfield.

The organization needs another 10 members to qualify for a charter.

VFW officials will be in Leitchfield Saturday morning at Walmart at 8:30 until 1:00 to provide potential members with information about Veterans Benefits.

The cost to join is $35 and officials ask that you bring a copy of your DD-214 or other documents showing your overseas combat duty experience. If already a member of the VFW, you can transfer to the new post and also be a charter member, officials said.

With a post in Leitchfield, veterans can file VA Claims and receive the latest updates concerning veteran’s issues in Frankfort and Washington, according to VFW officials.

VFW posts provide community service programs such as the Voice of Democracy program for high school students, who can win up to $30,000 in scholarship money, as well as the Patriot Pen program for middle school students where up to $5,000 can be won, according to officials.

Grayson County Judge-Executive Kevin Henderson is allowing the VFW Post to use the third floor of the Old Judicial Building, located on East White Oak Street, as a meeting hall.

Anyone with questions regarding the new VFW Post is asked to contact State Chief of Staff (KY) for VFW Carl Kaelin at 502-435-9574, or Tim Hack at  270-230-5654.
