The state Fire Marshal has investigated Wednesday night’s house explosion in Millwood and reached a conclusion on the cause of the blast.

According to Leitchfield Fire Chief Tim Duvall, state fire investigators said a faulty gas furnace, leaking propane, was the cause of the explosion that injured Angela Young and her seven-year-old daughter, Johanna, also known as Jo Jo.

K105 reported earlier on Thursday that the home’s propane tank was filled by a worker at about 3:00 Wednesday afternoon, with the worker saying he smelled gas after filling the tank.

Young arrived home at 6:00 Wednesday night and was told by a family member that she and her daughter should not stay at the home for fear of a gas leak. The house exploded as they were leaving the residence only minutes later.

The blast was felt as far away as Bloomington Road, 10 miles from Millwood.

Young suffered burns over a large part of her body and is being treated at University of Louisville Hospital. Jo Jo was burned on her arms and back and suffered a cut to her head, but she is expected to be released from the hospital soon, possibly on Thursday.
