A Leitchfield man has been arrested after running from and fighting with a Grayson County Sheriff’s Office sergeant.
Sunday afternoon at approximately 3:30, GCSO Sgt. Fred Norder and Deputy Jeff King along with Leitchfield Police Department Officer Kelsey Overton arrived at 109 South Henninger Drive to serve an arrest warrant.
According to the arrest citation, Overton knocked on the front door of the residence when 27-year-old Daniel R. Coogle (not the suspect police were looking for) ran out the back of the house shouting, “You looking for me?”
Coogle ran through several yards as he fled police before running inside a mobile home. The home’s occupant, who did not know Coogle, made him leave the residence, resulting in the suspect continuing to flee, according to the citation.
Norder caught up with Coogle as the suspect ran between two A-Z Recycling buildings on West White Oak Street. With Coogle between the two buildings, which are separated by only a few feet, the suspect attempted to run past Norder. The sergeant, though, was able to take Coogle to the ground as the suspect fought with Norder.
After battling Coogle in the small space between the two buildings, Norder was able to bring him under control and detain the suspect, ending the chase.
Coogle told Norder, according to the citation, that he ran because he had a warrant for his arrest. Further investigation by Norder showed that Coogle had two outstanding warrants, both out of Bullitt County for absconding probation and failure to appear after being convicted in that county for possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) in April 2019.
Coogle was charged with fleeing or evading police (on foot), resisting arrest, second-degree burglary, third-degree criminal mischief, second-degree assault (police officer), and public intoxication (excludes alcohol) and lodged in the Grayson County Detention Center.
Assisting at the scene were LPD Officers Chase Melton and Bart Glenn and part-time officer Bryan Hammons.
