A Clarkson church has been severely damaged by a fire.

Saturday morning at approximately 3:55, the Clarkson and Leitchfield Fire Departments responded to the 100 block of Bethel Church Road to battle a blaze at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church.

Upon firefighters arriving on the scene, flames were coming from the rear of the building and rising about 15 to 20 feet into the air. A quick and heavy turnout of firefighters, though, resulted in the building not being totally destroyed, as firefighters made quick entry into the structure and knocked the blaze down.

The rear of the building suffered major fire, smoke and water damage, while the remainder of the church suffered major smoke damage.

Clarkson Fire Chief Andy Cain said the state Fire Marshal’s preliminary finding is that the fire began with an electrical short in a wall outlet in the southwest corner of the building.

No injuries were reported.
